The King’s last act of destroying his valued possessions, including people and goods, in a funerary pyre, demonstrated his final depravity. He also ordered that his eunuchs and concubines be added to the fire, to burn them and himself to death. On the funeral pyre were piled all his gold and valuables. Sardanapalus failed to defeat the rebels, and then enemies of the empire join the battle against him.Īfter Sardanapalus’ last defenses collapsed and to avoid falling into the hands of his enemies, Sardanapalus ordered an enormous funeral pyre. His debauchery caused dissatisfaction within the Assyrian empire, allowing conspiracies against him to develop. He spent his whole life in self-indulgence, and when he wrote his epitaph, he stated that physical gratification is the only purpose of life. “The Death of Sardanapalus” by Eugène Delacroix depicts the tale of Sardanapalus, a king of Assyria, who, according to an ancient story, exceeded all previous rulers in sloth and decadence. “The Death of Sardanapalus” by Eugène Delacroix

Though I trust in the author as he generally covers lost ground eventually and characters and their subplots come and go freely. I would have given it four starsI rarely use 5 stars and am reviewing old reviews to ensure I rarely used it as a five star book should be damn near nirvanabut as I just mentioned, I feel there were some chunks missing. Trust me if you know me then you would know thats a rarity. Three stars, for me, means this book is good, it was worth the investment of time in reading it, and I dont regret buying it brand new for full price. I give this book three stars I give the entire series a 4.5. In the beginning i think there might be a time jump, as I feel that Ive perhaps missed ZF 11.5 or something, but its nothing that bogs the reader down. I do enjoy this series, which Im reading concurrently with Demon Fallout, switching between the two as I await more additions to both of the series. Lyra, our half-wild, feisty young heroine, is drawn into a battle waged by much higher and murkier forces over a mysterious element called Dust – something that powerful individuals like Lyra’s uncle, Lord Asriel, want to harness for their own ambitions. There are so many parallels in this novel: both women lost their mother when young, both lost their true love, both lost babies, both are independent. Well, her death was neatly timed, but can't that happen in a novel? We disagreed about how Astrid died-did she kill herself or did she die a natural death? I had never thought of suicide but was generally outvoted. Or was it because she didn't want to see her daughter face life as a a girl and woman? Was it because she feared Sara would be sexually abused by her father as Astrid had been by hers? Was it to get back at her husband? doubtful. We agreed that it was difficult to understand why Astrid killed Sara, her child. When we arrived at the meeting, we were greeted by Joanne's angel food cake with white icing, blueberries and strawberries. The service was lackadaisical to say the least, but the food was satisfying. I suggested IHOP (some people complained about the lack of wine) because pancakes appear in the novel. Apparently there's a Scandinavian restaurant in Chicago, but that's a little out of the way. This book takes place in Sweden and New Zealand, and our search for restaurants that served these cuisines failed. Our August book was Astrid and Veronika by Linda Olsson. |
